Personality Traits of Virgo

One of my favourite things to do is open up the newspaper (or one of the many apps on my phone) and read my horoscope for the day. While I am aware these readings are rarely one hundred percent accurate…they can give you a better idea of the day ahead. Or at the very least, give you areas to focus your attention on.

I really do believe that our astrological signs can provide insight on our daily lives as well as dominant personality traits. Which is why astrology week is such an exciting time here on Cosmic Positivity. It gives Amanda and I the chance to learn more about the Zodiac signs – and share that information with you in a way that is straightforward and easy to digest. So, on that note! It is time to learn more about the sixth sign, Virgo.

Positive Characteristics. When it comes to the Virgo personality, there are many strengths to keep in mind. Typically, they are loyal, practical, hard working, and analytical. They are able to find logical solutions for difficult problems – without being overbearing or coming on too strong. People under this sign tend to be kind, caring, and sensitive. (Though they do not always showcase the latter.) They are organized and rarely leave things to chance.

Negative Characteristics. That analytical mind can be a great thing. However, it can also cause the Virgo to be overly critical of other people. They often find themselves feeling frustrated or irritated by the shortcomings of those around them. This sign also has a tendency to work too much and leave little time for rest or relaxation. Remember: patience and balance are the keys to success!

Facts About Virgos:
  • They love nature and try to spend as much time as possible outdoors.
  • Lucky numbers are 5, 14, 15, 23, and 32.
  • Virgos do not like asking for help and prefer to figure things out on their own.
  • This earth sign tends to feel things very deeply but can struggle to express emotions, as they are often considered illogical.

Are you a Virgo? How accurate are these traits to your personality?

Why I Love Trying New Things

It has always been this way. Ever since I can remember, I have experienced a thrill whenever something new came into my life. Whether it was Christmas, my birthday, or just a random day…. new things made me giddy. Perhaps this has to do with my upbringing. Growing up, we didn’t have a lot of money. The majority of my clothes and toys were hand-me-downs or came from thrift stores. Because of this, new items were extra exciting, because they were mine and mine alone.

This caused me to overdo it in my adult years. I spent my money on clothes, shoes, makeup, magazines, band merch, and anything else that I wanted. That caused me to spend rather than save for a long, long time. Though I would try over and over again to save my money…. the lure of shiny new things was too strong. I’d wind up going to the mall or buying an enormous amount of beauty products.

Over the last several years, I began to cut back, bit by bit. However, it wasn’t until I really got into crystal therapy, chakras, and all things new age, that I was actually able to limit my spending. I think it had to do with feeling more whole and complete with myself – and learning to appreciate the abundant life that I live. Sometimes, I stop and think about how much I have, how grateful I am for it, and how blessed my life is. It helps.

Of course, my resolution for this year was to spend less and appreciate more. Shockingly enough, it has happened. Despite the odd shopping trip and random moments of splurging, things are looking up. While I still love buying (and receiving) new items…it is getting easier and easier to love the things already in my life. For me? That is progress.

Are you in the same boat? How to you curb your desire for something sparkly and new?

A Few Books That Slipped Into My Library, and They Should Make Their Way Into Yours Too!

I look at books and see countless adventures waiting to be taken.  I devour them and reread them over and over again. Now I seem to focus more on books that will help me with my personal development and spirituality. I can’t seem to get enough of them.

There is a lot of books that have been entering my home lately. More than I can read at one time that is for sure. It doesn’t stop me from having them though. Here are some of my favourite books that have entered my home.

The Bible Series- I love this series and I am pretty sure I own most of them by now. I love these books specifically because they focus on one topic per book. This helps me to not feel overwhelmed and I can focus on one subject at a time.  I resort to these books when I need information on different subjects.  My favourites are the Astrology Bible, the Crystal Bible and the Chakra Bible.

The Big Bad Ass Book of the Zodiac- This book is awesome. It's not your typical astrology book. It's not a book that just spits facts at you. I like the fact it's like talking to a friend. You learn quite a bit about the zodiacs and about chinese astrology as well. It is easily becoming one of my favourite books to read.

An astrology series- Okay I don't actually know the name of this series. I randomly found while looking for more books on astrology. I am currently working on completing the series. So why did I choose this series? This is the first series I have found that actually separates the zodiac signs into each book. This is great to find information that doesn't always show up in just 1 book.

So I am pretty much set to read for the next year. Or 6 months depending on how I feel. What books have you been reading lately? What's your favourite book right now? Let us know in the comment section below!

Review: Jack Kornfield Guided Meditation CD

It was a few years ago now. After another night of insomnia (most evenings, it was difficult to get to sleep or difficult to sleep for more than a couple of hours), I needed a solution. That led me to YouTube videos of rain sounds. Then ocean noises. And  somewhere along the line, guided meditations. There was something that immediately connected me to them. I liked the calm and peaceful ambiance, the soothing voices, and the connection to self. They made me feel better and helped me sleep.

Since then, I have listened to many different guided meditations. One of the first that I bought on CD (rather than listened to on YouTube or downloaded from iTunes) was from Jack Kornfield. His guided mediation CD, “Six Essential Practises to Cultivate Love, Awareness, and Wisdom,” stood out to me. Since purchasing it…I have listened to the meditations many times. They are calming and effective.

This set actually contains two discs. On the first is: introductory materials (information about sitting practises and guided meditations), the loving kindness meditation, and the forgiveness meditation. The second disc included: the Buddha transforms difficulties meditation, the gratitude meditation, and mind like sky meditation. With a running time of over two hours…there is plenty to work with here. My personal favourites are the Buddha meditation and the loving kindness meditation.

Bonus? It even came with some free downloads. They included tons of fantastic meditation music, mindfulness guided meditation practise, and downloads about self-acceptance and compassion. Those, in addition to all of the meditations on the actual CDs, make this a truly wonderful resource.

If guided meditations are something of interest to you, consider checking this one out. It is certainly worthy of your time.

What guided meditation CDs do you listen to?

Why You Need To Buy A Himalayan Salt Lamp

One of the most popular items out in the market in the last few years has been the Himalayan Salt Lamp. Of course like everything else in my life, I jumped on the band wagon years after it came out. Why did I decide to do it? The past couple of winters I have been struggling with massive migraines. Tylenol doesn't seem to help, and unfortunately no doctor will prescribe something stronger. That's a good and a bad thing.  I prefer to find other means to solve that problem if I can. So the salt lamp entered my life.

So what is a Himalayan Salt Lamp? Essentially it is a big piece of Himalayan salt with a small bulb inside. It generates negative ions that helps to protect against germs in the air. It attracts the dirty water in the air, evaporates quickly and then releases clean air. It is actually a cool concept, but don't be fooled and think it is the best solution out there. Yes it does create negative ions, but not in large amounts that will solve all the air's problems.  There are larger amounts of negative ions in the woods, out in nature and near rivers. There is a reason why you will feel better after connecting with nature.

Salt lamps are great in rooms around microwaves, or computers. Since radiation comes off of these, a salt lamp works to cancel out as much as it can.  It is also great to use as a night light, but since it does produce a lot of light, maybe not a good idea to have it on at night in a child's room.

So what are some of the benefits of having a salt lamp? Well it helps to boost your mood,  improve sleep, calm your allergies, boost blood flow and improve your energy level. There is still a lot of research going on to test these theories.

So what do I think? I will say, when I have it on I sleep through the entire night. I wasn't doing that for awhile and it was getting frustrating. Unfortunately the next morning my head feels heavy. No headache which is great, but definitely heavy. I almost feel like someone needs to turn it off for my last couple hours of sleep. Weird right?

Maybe once I unpack it and set it up I will have it on during the day, and turn it off at night. Let's see how that works. I don't have any allergies or anything, so I can't comment on that, but I am curious as to what your thoughts are on the salt lamp? Does it work well for you? Let us know know your opinion in the comment section below!

Looking at Doreen Virtue Products

There have been many teachers on my spiritual path thus far. One that stands out in my mind is Doreen Virtue. If you have been interested in new age spirituality for a while, then you likely already know about her work. She is an author and motivational speaker, who covers everything from crystals, angel therapy, and nutrition. Over the last several years, she has released self-help books, guidebooks, oracle cards, CDs, motivational videos, and courses. Just about everything!

My introduction to Doreen took place at the first rock shop I ever went to. I picked up a guided meditation CD related to Chakra healing. From there, more and more of her products found their way into my life. Books, cards, videos, and so much more. I found that many of her teachings resonated with me. She has a straightforward approach that I appreciated as a beginner…. and still appreciate now.

Today, I wanted to highlight a few of the Doreen products in my own collection.

Magical Mermaids and Dolphins – Oracle Cards. The first is a wonderful set of oracle cards. If you have been reading this blog for a while, you will know that I really enjoy using oracle cards on a regular basis. They help me tap into what I truly want and often give me some much-needed peace of mind. This deck specifically is one of my favourites. I have a very strong connection to it. Not to mention, the illustrations are incredibly beautiful.

Crystal Therapy – How to Heal and Empower Your Life with Crystal Energy. This next product is a fabulous resource book. I ordered this online not long after dipping my toes into the proverbial waters. It was a fabulous starting point. The book highlights what crystal therapy is, what the most popular/commonly used crystals are, and the most effective ways to use them. If you are a beginner yourself or know someone who is…give this book a try. It will be extremely useful.

Chakra Cleaning: A Morning and Evening Meditation – CD. This is the product that started it all for me. I was already a fan of guided meditations, so if that is something you enjoy, you will really like this. The meditations are relaxing and powerful. You really feel lighter and more balanced after each and every meditation. Something I like to do? Light a candle for each chakra as the meditation goes on.

Archangel Michael – Oracle Cards. As I began reading Doreen’s work, I found that I was really interested in/connected to Archangel Michael. Whenever she wrote about him, I found myself feeling very peaceful and at ease. (That feeling sparked an interest in angel therapy for me. But that is a story for another time!) That led me to these oracle cards. Though I do not use these all of the time – usually just when I am really searching for guidance – whenever I do…I experience an overwhelming sense of purpose. It really is remarkable.

If you are interested in finding out more about these products or checking out her many other offerings, visit her author page on HayHouse.com.
